IC Information
Canon: Honkai: Star Rail
Character: Boothill
Canon point: 2.1, prior to his arrival on the Astral Express/Penacony
Canon intensity: Medium intensity sci fi with some fantasy elements, light cosmic horror, light psychological horror
World information: Although Boothill started his life in a Western, he was eventually introduced to the wider science fiction galaxy and is now a space cowboy.
The Honkai Star Rail universe consists of multiple star systems that are only loosely connected - the only way to travel between them is to be a Pathstrider, or someone who has followed in the footsteps of one of the gods, called Aeons, or to travel with a Pathstrider. The first Aeon to connect many systems was Akivili the Trailblaze using his “Astral Express” to create silver rails throughout the galaxy that others could also follow.
One of the other notable groups that has an interastral presence is the Interastral Peace Corporation (IPC), followers of the Aeon of Qlipoth the Preservation. They are nominally dedicated to promoting peacekeeping and trade throughout the galaxy but in many cases are examples of the worst kind of capitalist imperialism, claiming planets through fair or foul means and exploiting them and their populations for the resources they have to offer.
Other notable Aeons include Lan the Hunt, who is dedicated to justice through violence, Yaoshi the Abundance, who is known for granting immortality with some heavy side effects, Aha the Elation, who is in it for the lolz, Fuli the Remembrance, whose followers give up their bodies to become purely memetic beings, and Nanook the Destruction, who is the youngest Aeon and is committed to ending the galaxy someday with their Anti-Matter Legions.
Because the connection between worlds is tenuous and can easily be broken, technology varies widely between them. For instance, Jarilo-VI is a planet that has been cut off from other worlds for a long time and largely has a 20th century level of technology (plus robots based on antiquated technology from before the planet was cut off). Meanwhile Penacony, a popular interastral tourism destination, has advanced dream-sharing technology, and there are other systems with highly technological space stations, or space ships as big as a planet with organo-tech components.
Boothill’s home planet, Aeragan-Epharshel, was one of the more isolated planets when he was young. It had heavy Wild West vibes with ranches, horses, railroads connecting distant settlements, bandits, bounty hunters, gangs - all the components needed to make a thrilling adventure story. It was eventually colonized by the IPC for mining and the inhabitants killed or forced into reservations.
Character biofacts: Boothill has had approximately 90% of his body voluntarily replaced by cyborg parts. It is unclear which parts remain organic, but presumably his brain and it does mention that his heart is also still there. He is missing his right eye and is unable to cry, so the other is probably artificial as well. It has a white gun sight on the iris and a red pupil that lights up at times. His face/head appears normal, but it is possible that parts there have also been replaced since his teeth are now sharp and he is able to chew bullets without a problem.
His blood is now blue and his teeth are sharp - and strong enough to literally chew and swallow bullets, which doesn’t seem to have any ill effect on his digestion. He has a gun embedded into his left arm with the index finger serving as a barrel, and possibly there are more guns than that. His voice has a slight metallic echo behind it due to the mechanical nature of his vocal cords.
Boothill does not attempt to hide his cyborg parts so they’re pretty much just out there for everyone to see. Beyond that, his most striking feature is his waist length white and black hair. It is unclear how old he is, as it’s likely that being transformed into a cyborg interrupted his aging. Appearance-wise, he looks like he’s in his 20s or 30s.
About the character: Boothill was found in the forest by a couple named Nick and Graey and raised with other adopted siblings on their ranch. He had a very happy childhood with his family, learning everything his fathers knew about nature and ranching. As he grew up he developed a love of music, as well as hunting.
His life as a cowboy was comparable to what ranchers in the Old West might have experienced - enjoying the freedom of the open countryside, but also battling dangers like wild predators and bandits. Boothill gained a reputation for daring, courage, and skill in fighting rival gangs, taking down bandits (including as a bounty hunter) and hunting animals. His siblings married and moved out of the family ranch but he stayed with Nick and Graey as they got older.
One day while out in the boonies he found a baby girl in a very similar way to how he had been found by Nick and Graey and (also similar to his fathers) he brought her home and adopted her. He made her a little guitar and sang songs to her.
Then everything changed when the Interastral Peace Corporation attacked. Or, rather, when they decided to ‘develop’ Aeragan-Epharshel for mining purposes. Although Boothill and the other ranchers fought back against the IPC with guerilla tactics - as they’d always fought against anyone trying to steal their property - the IPC’s technological level was high above theirs and the fight was pretty much doomed from the start. Boothill realized that the only way the IPC would ever stop coming was if he found and stopped the man in charge.
Showing signs of the audacity that would become his trademark, he stole an IPC uniform and snuck onto the IPC’s flagship, successfully reaching the bridge - where he didn’t see the leader, but he was in time to hear an announcement that the Marketing Development Department of the IPC was taking over governing the planet and authorizing subjugation of the inhabitants by military force. Realizing that things had suddenly just become much more dangerous, Boothill fled the flagship and returned home… but the bombardment by the IPC ships had already started, and his home was in flames. His fathers and everyone else on the ranch were dead. He desperately searched the ashes for his daughter, but never even found her body.
The IPC successfully subjugated the planet. The surviving locals - mostly the elderly and very young - were confined to reservations. Of course, the incident was logged in official IPC records as an “unknown disaster”, allowing them to escape any censure for the massacre. Whoever the man was that had been in charge was soon erased from historical records and although Boothill returned to Aeragan-Epharshel several times, he was never able to find the information there.
Boothill swore revenge on the IPC and the Marketing Development Department. At some point on his quest, Boothill became one of the Galaxy Rangers, a loose organization that followed the path of Lan the Hunt, meeting violence with violence and pursuing evildoers through any means possible. The philosophy meshed very well with his quest, especially since he considered anyone in the IPC to be an evildoer until proven otherwise. The only rules they had were to never bully the weak or kill an innocent, and that bottom line was quite acceptable for Boothill.
The search for revenge took Boothill far beyond his homeworld - a world he had once thought was the only one that existed. He was careless with his life, to the point where his body became covered with scars. Eventually, he sought a unique kind of medical aid, asking a strange doctor to completely replace his body with cybernetics. She was reluctant, but agreed to do so. Although it nearly killed him, he woke up from the surgery with a new understanding of life - he wasn’t living for himself, but for his daughter and the rest of his dead family. He couldn’t seek the peace of the grave until after he had gotten revenge, and that meant he had to play things smart.
Boothill gained a reputation throughout the galaxy as an independent bounty hunter and criminal and racked up a serious IPC bounty. One of his most notable heists was forcing his way into a Garden of Recollection branch and searching for memory bubbles related to Aeragan-Epharshel, searching for information. Since the Memokeepers were distracted, he was able to find a memory bubble that had a scrap of information that gave a name to the shadowy target he’d been hunting - Oswaldo Schneider, the head of the Marketing Development Department.
Oswaldo Schneider moved through the IPC like a ghost and was nearly impossible to track, but Boothill wasn’t the sort to give up easy. If he couldn’t be tracked, other IPC higher-ups could, and one of them surely knew where he was and how to get to him. While working on his alternate plans and continuing to cut a swath through the IPC whenever possible, Boothill heard word of a strange Galaxy Ranger named Acheron. Somehow he was able to determine that she was not a real Galaxy Ranger, but merely posing as one - and he took that personally, making her his next target.
Along the way he was able additionally find out that she was an Emanator of Nihility, a being which should not exist. IX the Nihility does not grant powers to people in the way other Aeons do. Those who walk too deeply into its shadow end up erasing themselves from reality - and yet Acheron had somehow harnessed the powers of Nihility, making her one of the most dangerous beings alive. Taking a brief break from his mission of vengeance, he turned his sights on Acheron, plotting to follow her on her journey to Penacony and keep her from being a danger to innocents. As a true Galaxy Ranger, this was a duty he was more than willing to fulfil.
Abilities: Gun.
Okay but seriously he is an excellent marksman and quick draw. He has a gun embedded in his arm and wields a revolver. He has the ability to increase his target’s vulnerability to physical damage. He is an excellent hand to hand combatant as well.
Due to his robot frame, he likely has greater than human strength, speed (he’s seen dancing through bullets), and durability. I think it’s likely that his single eye also has enhanced aiming I mean come on it literally has a gunsight on it.
Noteworthy items: Enhanced 9mm six shooter revolver (I don’t know guns I cannot say more than that?), lots of ammo, stylish hat, gun arm, shrug jacket, jeans that are too tight
